Why Wear Organic ClothingWe all want clothes that look great... why
else would we buy them? There are quite a few other reasons to purchase organic
clothing that span beyond great style. Many of us hear about organic food, and
may have a great grasp of what that means for our health. The clothes we wear
have a very similar (though at times indirect) interest in being organic as
well. Here, we will give you a basic understanding of the benefits of organic
clothing.
What
is organic clothing?
Organic in general refers to a growing
process that does not include the use of an artificial or synthetic fertilizer.
Growing aids are still used, but none that contain harmful chemicals that can
be potentially hazardous to the ecosystem or the creatures within it. There are
many different benefits of organic cotton and other textiles, as the effects of
these chemicals are much more than what meets the eye.
The
Problem with Pesticides
When pesticides are sprayed onto a crop of
cotton, three very important things happen. First, they are dumped onto the
crops from the air-- which makes the toxins airborne and allows them to spread
further. Second, a good portion of the chemicals are absorbed into the cotton,
not just left on the surface to kill the potential destroyers of the plant.
Third, residual pesticides are washed during rains to water sources through
runoff and ground water channels. This effects both the animal ecosystems and
our drinking water.
Health
Benefits of Organic Clothing
The health problems that arise from
pesticides have been extensively researched, and many are known carcinogens.
Despite this fact, many synthetic fertilizers are used in conventional growing
techniques. When you opt to wear organic clothing, you run less of a risk of
being exposed to these harmful chemicals through direct contact with your
clothing and you endorse an industry that works to keep these pesticides from
our drinking water as well.
Safeguarding
Against Allergies
The more pesticides are used during the
growing process, more insects will grow tolerances for these particular
chemicals. This means that higher concentrations will be necessary to keep them
at bay. Without knowing it, many people suffer from allergies to pesticides
that are used in the cotton growing process. Choosing organic clothing allows many
to live more comfortably—and safeguarding against the increasing tolerance of
insects will lessen reactions to cotton clothing overall. It is important to
note, however that the benefits of organic cotton reach to all, regardless of
allergies.
Because cotton is so very common among the
pieces in our closets, we often don’t think about the potentially harmless
nature of our clothing. We may have preconceptions that organic clothing is
more expensive or we can’t reach the same level of style as we do with clothing
made with conventionally grown cotton. This is absolutely not the case,
however. The increasing presence of organic lines throughout the fashion world
is opening doors for anyone that wants to explore their personality through
fabulous, eco conscious looks that are good for you—inside and out!
